One long, hot summer in seventies London, Holly and Marina make a childhood pact to be friends forever. For the troubled, unpredictable Marina, with her seemingly glamorous father and her Valium-addicted mother, Holly stays the only constant in a life of divorcing parents, experimental drugs and fashionable self-destruction. Meanwhile, Holly buries herself in books out of feelings of frustration with her over-protective mother and a nagging insecurity around her beautiful and possessive best friend.
Marina: You should dye your hair Holly, you look like a virgin.
Holly: I am a virgin.
Marina: But you don’t need to broadcast it.
Michelle: “I fell in love with the script. It’s just beautiful and so intricate. You know, nobody was more surprised than me. I wouldn’t have thought that anybody would have cast me in that role. I met the director, Sandra [Goldbacher], just once, and I didn’t read for her — we just talked about a dream that I’d had, and two months later I got the part.”
“I’ve no idea why they thought I could play an English girl. It’s not just learning an accent, there is an inflection and demeanor, an entire English way of being that is so decidedly un-American. It’s such a hard accent and you have to have an agile tongue. But it’s been a fantastic challenge. I kept up the English accent throughout – much to the annoyance of my family and friends.”
• Anna Friel originally auditioned for the role of Holly.
• The movie was shot entirely in the UK while Michelle was on breaks from Dawson’s Creek.
• Michelle had to dye her hair brown for this role, so she wore a blonde wig while filming scenes for Dawson’s Creek.
