Drama, film, best digital media platforms to promote the country’s image: Fawad

DUBAI – Federal Minister of Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain said on Saturday that theatre, film and digital media are the best platforms to portray and promote a country’s image to the world. Addressing the inaugural screening ceremony of Pakistani films at Expo 2020 Dubai here, he said Pakistan was the third greatest filmmaker in the world in the 1960s. He said Pakistan was then the second country in the world to have big cinemas. The film industry and cinemas in Pakistan have not received much attention since the 1970s, the minister said. The film industry was in decline due to lack of attention in the past, he said, adding that the Pakistani government Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had taken steps to revive the film industry and drama in the country. He said the government had reduced electricity tariffs for cinemas across the country.

Moreover, the government has also taken measures to revive the film industry and all taxes on the film industry have been removed. He said taxes had been imposed on foreign content to encourage local production houses. He said a tax has been imposed on foreign dramas so that Pakistani artists can work in dramas and commercials. There were beautiful tourist spots in Pakistan where NOC procedures for making films are also simplified, he said. Appreciating the Pakistan pavilion at Expo Dubai, he said the films shown there were aimed at international audiences.

At Expo 2020, Pakistan promoted its cinema by screening its blockbuster films.

A total of 11 Pakistani films would be screened in the Pakistan Pavilion every Friday and Saturday until February 26.

On the first day during the opening ceremony, Tifa In Trouble was screened. Information Minister Chaudhry Fawad cut the ribbon for the screening of films at the Pakistan Pavilion.
